How to get the most out of your hearing aids:

Now that you have invested your time, energy and money into hearing aids here are some tips to get the most out of your hearing aids.

1. Have a yearly check up with your audiologist

Hearing loss often deteriorates gradually over time so we are not always consciously aware of changes to our hearing. A yearly hearing test and a subsequent adjustment of your hearing aids ensure they are programmed optimally for your current hearing levels and that you are getting the most out of your devices.

2. Wear your hearing aids regularly

Hearing aids take time to adjust. There are many sounds including background sounds that you will now be able to hear with your hearing aids that you were not hearing before. On top of this, some sounds can seem sharp or unpleasant at first. Some people adjust to their hearing aids within a few weeks while others may take up to 3 months to fully adjust to the new sound. Over time our brains adapt to the new sounds you are hearing and learn to block out the sounds we don’t want to hear such as the hum of air conditioning. This adjustment, however, can only occur if you consistently wear your hearing aids. We recommend wearing your hearing aid most of your waking hours.

3. Regularly clean your hearing aids

Hearing aids sit in our ear canals most of the day. As a result they are susceptible to wax, moisture and dirt. Regular cleaning and maintenance is required for all hearing aids and will help prevent damage. Make sure to clean the dome, wax filter and microphone ports every 1 to 2 weeks and change the domes and wax filters at least every 3 months to prevent damage to your hearing aids.

4. Use a dry aid kit

A dry aid kit draws out moisture from your hearing aid and prevents moisture damage and corrosion.
